How to Chew

Updated: Feb 19, 2025

Be careful not to bite your tongue

Chew more for chewier food, less for softer food

Chew as quietly as you can, especially if in a quiet place

Chew hard or tough pieces of food properly before swallowing

Chew in the parts of your mouth where you have teeth, especially if eating nuts

Chew slowly and steadily

Chew until all the taste in the bite is gone

Chew until you have no sense of the original texture of what you are eating

Chew until your food is like liquid and there aren’t any crunchy or tough pieces

Don't drink and chew at the same time

Finish chewing and swallowing before taking another bite of food

Focus on chewing, but don't overfocus

Keep your mouth closed

Let your jaw rotate slightly

Have a habit of chewing well

Move food around in your mouth with your tongue

Put your fork or spoon down between bites

Remove outside distractions

Sit and relax when eating

Try counting your chews if it helps you chew more, like up to 32 times

Try not to overload your spoon or fork

Try not to talk and chew at the same time

Use your knife to cut food into smaller pieces first

Use your molars to chew tougher food to break them up

How Not to Chew

Distractedly

In a hurry

Loudly

On the run

Quickly

Standing up

While stressed

With too much in your mouth

With your mouth open

Without breaking food down
